Welcome to the Interactive Ancient Mediterranean
home page
IAM is an on-line atlas of the ancient Mediterranean world designed to serve
the needs and interests of students and teachers in high school, community
college and university courses in classics, ancient history, geography, archaeology and related fields.
NEW: The activities of the Interactive Ancient Mediterranean Project have been taken over by the Ancient World Mapping Center at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and the content of this website will eventually be incorporated into the AWMC. The Center has a growing set of on-line resources related to the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World and to other aspects of ancient geography and cartography. By visiting the AWMC web site, you can find updates to the Barrington Atlas; free, downloable maps for educational use; and articles about new discoveries. The IAM web site (this page) remains available on the web for historical reasons, but it will not be updated in the future. For all updates, please visit http://www.unc.edu/awmc.
- To view, download and/or print maps of the ancient world, visit IAM's map room. Maps are no longer being added to the IAM Map Room. Please visit the AWMC Maps for Students Map Room instead.
- To find out about a particular place in the ancient world, please proceed to the New place section.
- To search for individual materials in the IAM database (images, citations, abbreviations, words and phrases), you'll want the Search section.
- To learn more about the project, its staff,
history and status, please consult the Overview
section.
- You can copy, reuse and redistribute IAM materials for non-profit, educational purposes. Please consult IAM's Copyright
and fair use statement.
- Concerned about Internet privacy? See our
Privacy policy statement.
Other web-based ways to visit places in the ancient world:
- Various resources from the Perseus Project:
- The Perseus Atlas: Every Perseus text in English that refers to places in the Atlas database features links to the Atlas, showing all the sites named in the current page or in the entire text. When sites are plotted on the Atlas map, the Atlas supplies links to the Perseus Lookup Tool for further information about the sites.
- The Princeton Encyclopedia of Classical Sites (PECS): searchable full text of this 1976 handbook featuring archaeological and historical overviews of important classical sites.
- The Perseus Site Catalog: extends, amplifies and updates the material contained in PECS, providing information on other time periods, sites and aspects. Includes site plans and links to photographs.
- Bruce Hartzler's Metis: A QTVR Interface for Ancient Greek Archaeological Sites: 51 (and growing) multi-node panoramic, interactive walk-throughs of sites from Actium to Zakros. The walk-throughs include hotlinks to relevant materials included in the Perseus resources listed above.
Please feel free to browse around our site,
try things out, and email us with suggestions and comments (awmc@unc.edu).
