Privacy policy statement

The Interactive Ancient Mediterranean web site resides on a server which is owned and operated by the Department of Classics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Under normal circumstances, neither the web site nor the server collects personal identification information from persons visiting the site.

The server does routinely collect domain addresses, as well as file access, download bandwidth, browser type/version, and access time/date statistics. In addition, the IAM web site collects and stores information concerning placename and keyword requests and searches, both successful and unsuccessful. IAM project staff members use this information to track user interests, evaluate system performance, and plan and prioritize system and content upgrades. This information is never associated with email addresses or user names, and is only communicated to people outside the IAM project in the form of aggregate statistics, when required for progress reports and grant proposals.

No cookies are sent to or accepted from web browsers by the IAM web site.

The IAM project and the Department of Classics have no control over, nor are responsible for, any information collected by other systems at UNC-CH.

Abuse policy

From time to time, security concerns may dictate deviations from the privacy policy stated above. In no case will any additional personal information be collected or used for anything other than legal, security-related activities.

Definitions

Access time/date statistics
See file access statistics.
Browser type/version statistics
What type and model of browser software is used to connect to the web site (e.g., "Netscape Navigator 4.05").
Cookies
A small piece of information a web server sends to your browser, which then stores the information for later retrieval by that server. This information may only be read by the server which created it, and generally has an expiration date on which the cookie is automatically erased by your browser. Servers can use cookies to keep track of repeat visits by individuals, to store user preferences (e.g., your favorite sports team for a scores-related site), and to keep track of other similar types of information.
Domain addresses
The general internet domain from which users connect to the web site. The addresses stored do not include the name of the machine or account from which someone connects. For example, if you connect from a user account named "camille" on a computer named "redrock.bogus.state.gov", our database will record the domain address as "bogus.state.gov."
Download bandwidth statistics
How much information is sent from our server to each connected browser. This information is sorted by date, time, and client connection.
File access statistics
Which files are accessed, when and how often.
Personal identification information
Information that can be used to identify and/or locate a particular individual. For example: name, address, phone number, email address, computer name, user account name.
