  Status and near-term improvements

IAM is dependent upon the receipt of additional funding for completion and on-going maintenance; however, the first edition of IAM, comprising some 50 sites and regions and including a number of enhanced capabilities, is currently being tested and reviewed. It will appear on October 7, 1998. The following enhancements will be included in the first edition:

  • Additional downloadable maps added to map room (e.g., Greek dialects, Roman provinces)
  • Search facilities for place names, site content, abbreviations of ancient works
Long-term goals and enhancements

If additional funding can be secured, the following improvements in IAM site content and features will be undertaken:

  • Robust, performance-oriented help system
  • Support for polytonic Greek fonts in name examples
  • Addition of the 50 most requested sites not included in the first edition
  • Addition of 200+ more ancient sites, areas and features, with the goal of covering all of those mentioned in the Cambridge Latin Course, Wheelock's Latin Grammar, the AP European History syllabus and the National Geography Curriculum for grades 9-12
  • Creation of a large number of additional thematic maps
  • Addition of an educator's section in which suggested lesson plans and curriculum materials for grades 9-12 (Latin and History) and secondary courses would be provided
  • Addition of functionality to support citation of Greek and Latin inscriptions and papyri for name examples and place descriptions
